kids from the river

A book of poems, lyrical essays and family photographs.

This is for my mother.

An aerial photograph across two pages: a river delta spills pale water into the sea along a curving coast, which runs on into deep blue water on the facing page.

the book

kids from the river is a collection of intimate poems, lyrical autobiographical essays and familial photographs by Okhiogbe Omonblanks Omonhinmin.

In a non-linear rendering of the past and present, of memory, dreams, self-reinvention, spirituality and the non-physical, we witness the transformative power of loss and grief as well as the redemptive nature of devoted love and responsibility.

The book is rooted in Omonhinmin’s origin as an Esan boy from Benin City in Nigeria and details the events that accelerated his journey into maturity. It also explores his early consciousness and evolving observations about being a man, an African, and a b/Black individual in a patriarchal and prejudiced society.

As a tribute, kids from the river honours his mother, Victoria Elomese Omonhinmin, and his grandmother, Theresa Otibho Okhiogbe Oboh, the fountains from which he springs.

passing through time

Omon draws time as a spiral, a line that travels outward and comes back. One of these drawings reads “Roots of the Earth. Return.” Another sets its words in pairs: to make things and to break things, to see things and to unsee things, to feel things and to unfeel things.
